So I'm sitting here in my study chair, attempting to study. It didn't work, obviously, as I'm currently blogging. Terrible work habit aside, today's review brings a touch of retro glamour to your screen with Lancome's Rouge In Love long wear lipstick in 170N Sequins D'Amour, or in English, Sequence of Love. This is described as a neutral true red which implies that this red will not only be visually striking as a primary red, but it is also mixed with blue and orange bases to suit all skin tones.
Personally, I prefer reds that are more neutral/leaning cool and that often comes in form of a dark or blood red lipstick. I feel that these reds tend to warm up my flat toned colouring and give me some more life. Having said that however, a good cool red should be in every brave girls collection as a go to product for those days where just a hint of bedazzling red lips can make them feel like the world's watching, and they want it to.
To start, let's talk packaging. The tube comes in a little cardboard box with reflective plastic(paper?) and the tube itself is a heavy, silver-ish metal and feels luxuriously expensive - which is desired because for the obscene price this sells in Australia, for only 3.4 grams of product, you betcha I want some luxury packaging. The outer tubing is lightly matte-e-fied with the brand logo in the same silver metal as the bottom logo. There is this pretty but random stitching detail directly opposite the logo, which I am not entirely sure I like or not. It feels like the designers saw how normal the container was and thought "oh heck, just throw this on". Still, it is aesthetically pleasing so you did alright, designer, The packaging is gorgeous, but not as heavenly as the Guerlain Rouge G lipstick compacts with the mirror.
Next up, the colour. I've already disclosed that I'm not the biggest fan of warm reds, but the colour 170N just happens to be the perfect mix of: blue enough to brighten my smile, yet with just the right amount of orange-y red to not clash with my yellow undertones. Huge plus in other words. A lot of the time I find that drugstore/high street reds just don't work well with my skin chemistry or something, so even if the formulation is fine, the colour will still look awful on me. Hence, from now on I've pretty much pledged to not buy drugstore lipsticks anymore, but that's a story for another day.
Luckily, I believe I have found the perfect true red in Sequins D'Amour; which is just screaming for attention, in a very classy and elegant sense. As you can see in the very last image, It does look more orange than blue based, but as my lips are already quite pigmented, the colour is just a dream to behold when applied. Not quite what I love in reds, but beautiful, vivid and richly pigmented nonetheless, so I'm giving this many many plus symbols for colour and colour payoff.
Formulation wise, the Rouge in Love line is perfect for me. Long wearing is a definite. I tried this once on a full 10 hour day and I only had to touch up after big meals. Otherwise this thing didn't feather or budge around town and even though it does wear off, it is very pigmented it leaves a pretty intense stain. At first, this lip rouge applies so so smoothly, I was almost disappointed because I thought it would be all slippery. Have no fear, it dries and leaves a nice sheen. Nothing like the icky oiliness I find when using YSL lipsticks or heavy dragging from some of MAC's creme shades. Ah-mazin'.
It is safe to say that Lancome's Rouge in Love formula and colour payoff for 170N is so fan-freaking-tastic that I want more. I was a little miffed to find that Lancome is not cruelty free, but then again, most luxury brands such as Chanel and Dior aren't either. I'm also a meat eater - it would be very hypocritical of me to use specifically vegan products from brands that are completely cruelty free and still preach about awful animal treatment. I love my steak, okay. Still, more on this in my next post which will discuss this kind of issue, so don't go calling me a horrible human of Earth just yet; my reasoning will become clear in due time.
